World Animal Day
What Nature Gives
Exists without ever belonging to anyone.
Solidarity speaks of equality,
yet conceals within it
the order of the one who rules
and the one who is ruled.
Coexistence speaks of freedom,
yet sometimes decides
the very shape that freedom should take.
Upon the fields where peace had settled,
those who grazed upon the grass
and wandered beside one another
were given names and orders
without ever being asked.
The definition of that relationship
is it truly right?
The fields where they once wandered freely
were never spaces granted by someone else,
but places that had belonged to them
from the very beginning.
True coexistence
is not to possess one another,
not to define another’s life in their place,
but to step back
so that each may exist in their own way.
Perhaps that is
the oldest way we have known
to begin our solidarity with them,
as those who have always shared
a relationship with nature.
World Animal Day,
in honor of their freedom.
